Instead of Leaving Shorewood, SunSeekers Expanding to Milwaukee's East Side

Construction has already started on a new shop off of East Prospect Avenue; tanning salon owner plans renovations to Shorewood location.

With his lease up, Shorewood tanning salon owner Ryan Nesbitt said he planned to move his shop out of the village, but after finally settling on a deal, he’ll stay and instead expand to Milwaukee’s east side.

Construction has already began on a new storefront next to American Apparel near East Prospect Avenue and East Kenilworth Place, which will mark SunSeekers' 13th location in the state.

Nesbitt said he hopes to tap into the college student population in the area, with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee recently expanding to the neighborhood.

“In my eyes, I always thought it was kind of like a broken-down area on the east side,” Nesbitt said. “Now they have new buildings, the campus is expanded out there, there’s always something new going in down there.”

The store will be on the opposite end, near a parking lot, allowing easy and adequate parking for customers, he says.

However, the future of the Shorewood location could still be up in the air, but business has been good lately, so for right now he will stay.

The biggest difference between SunSeekers at 2420 E. Capitol Dr. in Shorewood and the new east side shop will be new equipment, specifically the higher-level beds that are popular amongst customers.

“As with all SunSeekers, customers will be able to share packages with that store and whatever store we’ve got going on,” Nesbitt said.

Even with its future in question, Nesbitt says he has some renovations in mind for the Shorewood location, because of the always-high demand for certain equipment.

“We have a lot of clients that come in, college kids," he said. "Sometimes we have 20-25 minute waits for our higher-level beds. So we thought about adding a little bit more equipment in the upper level."

Nesbitt recently bought out a salon chain in Oshkosh called Tan Lines, which he converted into SunSeekers, near North Koller Street on the frontage road by Highway 41.

“We do have a SunSeekers that opened up there in the last couple weeks and we’re taking business right now," Nesbitt said. "And that should definitely help with our UW students."
