Sendik's Plans to Remodel Shorewood Store

Owner John Nehring says he plans to stock more specialty items after remodel.

in Shorewood is looking to update and remodel what its owner calls an outdated North Oakland Avenue store.

“It may be the oldest still existing business in Shorewood and with that comes a very old building,” said store owner John Nehring.

The remodel will include a lot of minor changes, moving of aisles, replacing equipment, redoing floors but most significant of all is the shift to stocking more specialty items.

"If Pick 'n Save does expand and wants to build a metro market, that's fine, but there are certain things we can do that they can't," Nehring said. “We can be the specialty grocer, the small grocer that really deals in perishables. That’s what we do best. We will keep some of the basics.”

Nehring said he would like to start serving more hot, ready-to-eat food in the store. He plans to add another entrance to the store as well.

He added he was unsure about his store's future in Shorewood, as the lease on the store parking lot is set to expire with in a few years. He said that deterred him for remodeling in the past, but with the Mandel Group project a done deal, he feels confident Sendik's can stay in the village.

Nehring said he might seek financial assistance from the village on the cost of the remodel.

The remodel could start as soon as the village approves the plans.
