Camp Bar Expanding with 'The Cabin'

To accommodate the large crowds Shorewood's Camp Bar has been experiencing since opening in November, owners say they have expanded next door.

The popular North Oakland Avenue bar will introduce "The Cabin" during a grand opening event May 10, owner Paul Hackbarth said.

"We started Camp not only because it was a dream of ours but because we felt it is what the community needed on that end of Oakland Avenue," Hackbarth said. "So for us to not be able to give everyone that walked through the door a cozy spot to enjoy a drink in was difficult for us.

"We don't want to be known as the overcrowded bar, but with the quick success of Camp, we knew we had to make some changes," he added.

"The Cabin" will include additional seating for about 50 patrons, a large back bar and fireplace, with the entrance near the back of the main bar. It will also serve as a space to host private parties and events, Hackbarth said.

Hackbarth has been working for months on expanding into space next door at Sound By Design, which Hackbarth also owns. The storefront will remain, with the new addition in the rear of the space.

"We wanted to have that cozy up north feeling which we feel we accomplished, but there is something about the fireplace that makes the feeling of Camp complete," Hackbarth said.

Owners worked with architect Wade Weissmann of Wade Weissmann Architecture, and interior designer Greg Holm of Peabody's Interiors on the new space.

With Camp not serving food onsite, Camp has been partnering with Falbos Brothers Pizzeria. Hackbarth said Falbos has created a special pub menu for Camp that will be released this week, with additions like a Reuben and a Camp burger.

"It is refreshing to know that our dream is exactly what the community wanted, which makes it all worth while," Hackbarth said.
