Shorewood Junior Advances to National Theater Competition

Shorewood High School junior Martha Hellermann won the state’s National High School Music Theater Awards female lead competition on Saturday, and will now represent Wisconsin at the organization’s nation-wide contest, known as the “The Jimmys,” in New York City this summer.

Hellerman was eligible to compete for the honor after representatives from the Tommy Awards named her a Best Lead in a Musical for her performance in “Spring Awakening.” As part of Hellermann’s all-expense paid trip, she will compete at Minskoff Theatre inTimes Square and will also be eligible for prizes and scholarships at the event.

“The auditioning process was really intense,” Hellermann said. “They had us split into groups and we had to do dance numbers and we had to sing individual songs… but I’m really happy that I got the award. I’m nervous, but I’m excited [to go to New York].”

According to Shorewood Drama Director Joe King, Hellermann deserves the honor and recognition.

“Martha is a talented young actress and singer,” King said. “I am looking forward to watching her compete this summer, and am confident she will have continued success.”
