Photographer Captures Street Life with New Series at Anaba Tea

Foreman's photography series, "Street Scenes" goes on display July 6 at the tea room, with a reception starting at 6 p.m.

Street photographer Julie Foreman displays her collection of silver gelatin prints taken throughout many years of travelling in her new series Street Scenes at Anaba Tea Room.

Foreman’s photography goes on display July 6 at the tea room, 2107 E. Capitol Dr. The reception will feature live music by pianist Lynn Roginske and the work will remain on display through Sept. 1.

Working with a 35mm SLR camera, Foreman captures street life wherever she happens to travel. It can be on New York’s Upper East Side, the Tuileries in Paris, or the Piazza del Campo in Siena.

Her black and white photographs invite viewers in and tell stories about the places and people in them.

“Travel is an essential part of my work," she said. "When I’m traveling, my vision sharpens. I take the time to look at faces. I notice the architecture, what’s in window displays, the shade and intensity of light, and what people are wearing. I especially enjoy shooting in Europe. It’s easy being inspired in Florence or Paris.”

Hailing from Chicago, Julie studied journalism at Roosevelt University, and also attended Columbia College for photography. Several street photographers have influenced her work, the most influential being the father of street photography, Henri Cartier-Bresson. Cartier-Bresson coined the term “the decisive moment,” that moment when you snap the shutter and the photograph captures the whole story.

In her work, Julie aims to do just that. Julie has exhibited her work throughout the Chicago area, and in Strove and Monterriggioni, two villages in Tuscany, Italy.
