Shorewood Salt Supply Still Stacked High After Winter Storms

A stock pile left over from last year has the Shorewood Department of Public Works in good salt shape.

As winter storms hit Shorewood and Southeastern Wisconsin hard on Monday, Shorewood Department of Public Works' trucks were out plowing and salting local roads.

So, just how is the DPW's salt supply?

"Our salt supply is in good shape," LeeAnn Butschlick, the director of public works, said.

The DPW  purchases it's salt supply through a state contract with many different salt suppliers, in Shorewood's case, North American Salt Supplier. Butschlick said since they had a significant amount of salt leftover from the last year, it didn't have to purchase as much for this season.

Butschlick said that the department is taking care of the roads and that the storm on Monday was, "nothing out of the ordinary."

When salting is needed, one or more of the village's salting trucks are dispatched, depending on the nature of the storm. Main streets and collector streets are salted first, followed by residential streets.

The village uses salt (NaCL) alone when the temperatures are above 15 degrees fahrenheit. However, when the temerpature falls below 15 degrees, salt may be treated with calcium chloride (CaCl), which melts better. Salt is generally applied to the full length of the streets.
