Shorewood's Official Native Plant On Sale During Conservation Fair

The Butterfly Weed plants will be available for a special price at the conservation fair at Atwater School, which runs from 8 a.m to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Shorewood's native plant, the Butterfly Weed, will be on sale during Saturday's conservation fair.

Last summer, the Shorewood Waters Project held a native plant contest and residents chose the Butterfly Weed, Asclepias Tuberosa.

The Butterfly Weed is a a perennial species of the milkweed that sprouts yellow-orange flowers from summer to fall. It is known as the Butterfly Plants because butterflies are attracted to its bright colors. It also attracts hummingbirds.

They thrive in sunny and dry sandy or well drained loam locations and once established will grow into a nice compact plant that's 2-3’ tall and drought tolerant.

The Butterfly Weed plants will be available for a special price at the conservation fair at Atwater School, 2100 E. Capitol Dr., which runs from 8 a.m to 2 p.m. You can also find them at Shorewood’s Garden Room along with other plant sales to be announced later this spring.
