Shorewood Nearly Free of Basement Backups during Heavy Rains

Shorewood's sewers have held up well during severe storms this week.

The village has been nearly free of reported basement backups and severe flooding problems over this week’s severe storms.

Village Manager Chris Swartz said the village has had one report of a basement backup from Monday’s severe rains and none so far from Tuesday night’s rainfall.

The village removed a manhole cover on one block of North Newhall Street and pumped water out in anticipation of Tuesday night/Wednesday morning’s rainfall.

Outside of minor flash flooding and short-term road closures, Shorewood has been fortunate Swartz said.

Shorewood property owners were devastated when torrential rainfall last July caused basement backups and severe street flooding.

“The rain from last night (Tuesday) wasn’t as intense as we saw last July,” Swartz said. “We have really been fortunate.”

Monday, Shorewood police had to close the intersection of East Edgewood Avenue and North Maryland Avenue while the Shorewood Department of Public Works unclogged sewer drains, but Tuesday's rain caused no problems police say.

The Milwaukee metro area received around 3 inches Tuesday night and Wednesday morning with a total of more than 5 inches of rain since Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
