Sept. 1 Targeted for Fireworks Following July 4 Postponement

The Shorewood Foundation approved a recommendation to the village to reschedule the show for Sept. 1, the Saturday before Labor Day, after safety concerns prompted officials to postpone the July 4 show.

Organizers of Shorewood’s Fourth of July fireworks show gave the preliminary OK Tuesday for a rescheduled fireworks display on the Labor Day weekend.

The Shorewood Foundation, a volunteer-run non-profit organization which funds the fireworks each year, approved a recommendation to the village that the fireworks show be held on Sept. 1, the Saturday before Labor Day. Village officials will still need to approve the new date.

Foundation Board President Abe Goldberg said in discussions with Village Manager Chris Swartz, a beach party being held on August 11 by the Friends of Atwater Beach was kicked around as an option, but wasn't viable because the beach would have to be cleared by 2 p.m.

The group also considered a New Year's Eve show, or just canceling the display altogether this year.

The foundation spent $10,000 for this year’s fireworks show, and Goldberg said the contract with the company hired to do the show, Mad Bomber Fireworks Productions, carried a $4,400 cancelation fee.
