Butterfly Weed Named Shorewood's Official Native Plant

The Butterfly Weed is a a perennial species of the milkweed that sprouts yellow-orange flowers from summer to fall. It was chosen as part of an education and outreach program sponsored by the Shorewood Water's Project.

The Butterfly Weed has been named Shorewood's native plant by residents via a contest coordinated by the village.

As a part of this year's Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant education and outreach program; the sponsored the native plant contest, according to the Village Manager's Memo. The Butterfly Weed was chosen from six possible plants.

The Butterfly Weed is a a perennial species of the milkweed that sprouts yellow-orange flowers from summer to fall. It is known as the Butterfly Plants because butterflies are attracted to its bright colors. (information and photo courtesy ofΒ http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/).

The Butterfly Weed is not the only official plant of Shorewood. In 1930, the residents of Shorewood voted on the Official Flower of the Village. The zinnia edged out the petunia by four votes to be named the official flower of the village.Β
