Shorewood Schools' New Transgender Policy.

It appears Shorewood will be the first school district in Milwaukee county to "recognize" students who self-identify as transgender.  In order for a student to take advantage of this new policy, their parent must send the administration a letter stating that their child identifies in such a fashion.

Once the student's transgender status is officially recognized, he or she will be allowed to utilize both bathroom and locker facilities designated as being for the gender with which they identify - if they so choose. Should they elect not to do so, they'll be provided with access to a unisex bathroom and be able to use the coaches' locker room when changing for gym and, presumably, extra-curricular sports activities.   Here's a link to the policy itself:

Like the most recent 10th district assembly race and Messwood helmet controversy, the implementation of this policy may test the limits of Shorewood's claims of being a "progressive" community.

It will be interesting to see the reaction on the part of community members to the first instance of a boy or girl who identifies as a member of the opposite sex utilizing the associated locker facility for gym class. Will parents universally suppress what would be a natural and understandable concern regarding their child being exposed, literally, to boy or girl who identifies as "transgender" but manifests the physical gender identity they were born with - in the interest of promoting "diversity"?   Stay tuned....
