Shorewood resident earns highest Girl Scout honor with chess camp for girls
Milwaukee - Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast (GSWISE) has awarded Shorewood resident and Girl Scout Anjana Murali the highest award in Girl Scouting–the Girl Scout Gold Award. Girl Scouts who receive this award are challenged to complete a variety of requirements and carry out a project that meets an expressed need in the community and beyond.
By earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, Murali, also a girl member of the GSWISE board of directors has become a community leader. Her accomplishments reflect leadership and citizenship skills that set her apart.

As chess has been viewed as a male dominated sport for many years, Murali conducted a free two-day chess camp for girls ages 5-18 with the main goal of removing the gender disparity in the game. She also wanted to encourage more girls to play chess and participate in chess tournaments, and to teach valuable life skills through 64 squares. The 75 girls who participated learned how to play chess, competed in a five game tournament, and received chess and Girl Scout merchandise. The event drew a diverse group of girls with a wide range of skill levels, ethnicities, and locations who are now inspired to carry on the passion for chess and breaking gender barriers.

“I am the first person to start an initiative like this to empower girls in chess,” said Murali. “I have received a special invitation to join a nationwide initiative because of this project.”
A Girl Scout who has earned her Girl Scout Gold Award immediately rises one rank in any of the U.S. military branches.
This year, GSWISE recognized nine girl members for earning their Girl Scout Gold Award.
