What Should Fill the Empty Storefront that Used to House Actaea Works?

After 17 years in Shorewood, the salon and spa closed its doors in late 2010. What should fill the vacant location? Have any suggestions; what do you want to see take its place?

After 17 years in Shorewood, spa and salon Actaea Works Ltd. closed its doors in late 2010, leaving the shop at the northwest corner of East Capitol Drive and North Oakland Avenue vacant.

And, it’s remains that way to this day.

The shop was one of the 30 some salons that fill Shorewood storefronts.

So, would you like to see the location filled with another salon or something else?

Forget about the complicated regulations, the zoning restrictions and everything else that might put a wrench in your business idea.

Plain and simple: What business do you want in this specific location? Let us know in the comments below.

A family friendly pizza place with whole pizzas and pizza by the slice. Would be nice to have a few retro games like pacman and pinball. A little outdoor seating along the south side of building.

Don't we already have a couple of pizza places within blocks of that location? Maybe it would be nice if Vedo's could move into the bigger space and have a sit down area, but I don't see how 3 pizza places could all thrive so close together.

But Cow, that is how socialism works. Who cares if a business can survive. All we have to do is prop it up through government decree. Ask Keith. He will tell you all about it.

GREAT IDEA! I remember when there was a hardware store before the big fire in what is now the vacant Open Book space. That would be so convenient and I bet most would be willing to pay a bit more for the convenience of not having to go to a big box hardware store where the employees know little to nothing about the products they sell.

How about a bookstore that Shorewood funds and allows the owners to walk away from? Oh wait, that idea was already taken.

I like the idea of a hardware store, or an ethnic restaurant--Mexican or Indian food.

I am for the Mexican restaurant idea. Or bring back the sandwich shop that used to be there.

IMHO we have enough sandwich options here: Sendik's deli, Alterra (great lunch sandwiches!), City Market..

No way a hardware store makes it. It is the same thing as a bookstore. Outdated and not needed.

A Thai food place might be good too...

Maybe Big Bay Brewing could move in there and expand to do some brewing onsite. Make it a true brewpub rather than just a tasting room...

I'd actually like to see a nice hardware store move in. I usually end up driving to Home Depot or Ace in Glendale to pick something up. Would be nice to have something around the corner.

Before I started reading requests for a hardware store, that was my vote. The one on Brady, for example, does just fine. Let's get something practical in there ... we have enough "luxury" type businesses already that I can't afford. Also, people who rely on the bus would benefit.

Several good ideas here, but the biggest problem is it's owned by Katz. He would rather leave a space vacant for years rather than reduce the rent to a more reasonable level - never made sense to me.

Adam, ever go to the Ace on Downer? Seems closer than the one in Glendale.

Better parking in Glendale though...

Yeah, the parking is the main reason I usually go to the Glendale location. All the available parking off of Downer is metered, and even running in for five minutes to grab something is risky business if I don't have some coin in the car.

Whatever replaces Actaea, it will be neglected just like the rest of the block. Ever notice that the Katz properties are never shoveled during snow storms. Calling the village about this problem seems to fall on deaf ears.

Cow, you love the idea of a Mexican restaurant, but are against a Chipotle. That is pure CowDung. I would prefer an independent operator, but whomever moves into that spot better have some deep pockets to pay Katz.

I guess I consider Chipotle to be closer to fast food than I do do Mexican. We already have Qdoba locations near by that provide similar fare. I would prefer a Mexican restaurant that resembles La Fuente or even Rio West. We aren't going to bring visitors (and their money) into the village by opening another semi-fast food chain restaurant.

wow cow dung...lol. A Hardware store would be great. I loved the old one. I used to but pumpkins there as a kid. Smaller shops also seem to make better quality keys ( I have found anyway) and I seem to always need one made. I also think a mexican place would be nice. BUT PLEASE no more bread or coffee places.

They have Curves health clubs specifically designed for women. How about a hardware store geared towards women?

The Tool Shed.

I'm sure that more than a few North Shore husbands would be happy to have their wives share their interest in hardware.

You'd think with the proximity to the high school and middle school that you'd want something that caters to the kids as well as adults. High traffic corner with not a lot of parking. Since we as a people like to eat, I say restaurant like Comet or something. Be nice to be a little more original and not as 'polished' as the other places in town for dining.

With chains like Subway and Anytime Fitness already in that complex, it would be nice to see something unique in that space. Casual, sit-down dining like Rio West or Corazon would be nice. The high school kids can always go to Subway, Sendik's, Vedo's, or other places up on Capitol like Cousin's or Wendy's.
