Shorewood Summer Strings Concert Ends with a Flourish
Teacher Karen Frink directs nearly 200 summer orchestra students in end-of-summer megaconcert.
A crowd spilled into the Shorewood High School Auditorium Thursday for the Elementary Summer Orchestra Concert.
The Summer Strings program is run through the Shorewood Recreation Department for four weeks each summer, under the direction of orchestra teacher Karen Frink. Nearly 200 students performed Thursday night.
Student orchestra volunteers from Shorewood Intermediate School and Shorewood High School attended the four-week course as teaching assistants for the new students, with all 36 of them also on hand to help navigate the stage and concert.

"Some of the 200 students experienced the four-week course, nearly an instrument over the summer; and it culminated in a grand concert on the Shorewood stage."
Does this sentence make sense to anyone?

What it should say is, 183 students took the four-week-long course, which brings in beginners and returning elementary school students to the Shorewood School District orchestra program. Each student focuses on one instrument for this instruction. At the end of the four weeks, there is a concert for both beginners and advanced students. This year, the concert was on August 18, 2011.

OK--that clears it up. Thanks.
Do the returning students stay with their previous instrument or do they learn a new one? It's pretty amazing for a kid to go from nothing to putting on a concert in 4 short weeks...

Isn't it? My hat is off to those newbies - they pick an instrument - I think the returning students stick with what they've started, taking lessons during the year through the program, but I believe they have a chance to switch after summer and before Fall (or any time, most likely).
I think it is really amazing to see the brand new players - they come every day and are so serious about it. Having the older kids as volunteers to watch and play along is incredibly validating and brings them along very quickly.

It would be nice if Shorewood could do something similar in the areas of math and science...

Many kids preparing for Math Olympiad, Wisconsin Math League, and AMC-8 by doing problem sets over the summer. Contests don't start until November, though.
