Shorewood to Reschedule Fireworks Display for Another Summer Night

The village pulled the plug on its Independence Day fireworks display on Wednesday due to weather conditions, but plans to light up the sky over Lake Michigan sometime later this summer.

North Shore Fire Department officials and Shorewood police postponed the village's Fourth of July display Wednesday night due to hot, dry weather and windy conditions.

However, officials say they plan to reschedule the fireworks display for another night this summer at Atwater Park, though a date hasn't been set.

Concern over wind blowing off Lake Michigan pushing fireworks embers onto Atwater Park's dry bluff grasses, posing a danger of fire, caused the village to postpone.

I get why they want to be cautious, but I thought the fact that they shoot them off over the lake would alleviate the problem of the dry conditions. I'm not criticizing the decision, but I was sure our fireworks display was a go.

One headline says "Cancelled", one says "postponed". I assume it's cancelled.

The headline was changed as I got more information. Tonight's fireworks have been canceled, but organizers plan on rescheduling, though a date hasn't been set yet.

Okay, something changed since they closed the beach at 1:00 pm? Seems a little last minute.

It's a shame but I understand why. They literally launch them right next to peoples houses. You don't have the space between launch and spectator/house that you do in other areas. Better safe than sorry because if something happened there would be a lot of "if only". Something to look forward to later in the summer.

This was a bad decision. I don't think the conditions could have been better. Besides, these conditions were known all day and ther is no wind,, yet the decision was made after 5:00? Very disappointed.

Now I'm confused. I hear fireworks going off all around us yet Shorewood's are cancelled. Again, I understand caution, but why are we the only ones not shooting any off?

They were worried about the water burning? Little wind all day shoot them off over the lake....My take was that they just spent too much on the recalls this summer and decided not to purchase the fireworks...there are good decisons...bad decisions and then there are the ones made in Shorewood....

Ummmm, really? It IS hot. But then again, it IS July. And although the idea of some wind is nice, it just can't be found. And a 5:30 cancellation? Scratching my head. Anyway, just returned from a wonderful display at Klode. Thanks for hosting, WFB!

Really? Grow the heck up, people! A decision was made by officials who are responsible for the safety of this Village. MANY communities canceled their fireworks---not just Shorewood. As parents, you should have used this as a teachable moment. "Kids, life is full of disappointments, but we will make the most of it. Look at the wonderful community celebration we had today---an awesome parade and a party at the park!! We will have fireworks on another night---just not tonight." Wow...really tough conversation, huh lthm??? If you can't handle that one you are in for a rough road ahead as a parent.

Julie, you have zero right to comment on other peoples' parenting skills. It is a simple frustration that many parents had last night. Stick to the issue of the cancelation and not attacking people.

Davey, by your very comment above, then you have "zero right to comment on" what you describe in an earlier post as the "bad decision" made by the professionals to cancel the fireworks. Better to explain a "simple frustration" to your children than to have to explain to them why a terrible fire caused by fireworks destroyed land, homes, or worse yet someone's life!

I think Julie has every right to comment - when the excuse is "try to explain that to your kids" versus a huge fire on the bluff - that would be the real disappointment and a tragedy.
There were plenty of other fireworks all over the place and more to come in the summer with the various other festivals going on. She makes a very good point that if they can't handle that one, what can they handle. She was sticking to the issue of the cancellation as well. No one likes disappointing their children but keep it in perspective. This holiday was to commemorate our country not keep your kids entertained. That said, I was disappointed as well but as being a reasonable person, as you should be teaching your kids to be, I'll get over it.

Since this is the Northshore Fire Department, why weren't the WFB fireworks cancelled as well. Do we not have the same Fire Marshall? Were the winds dramatically different 1 mile north?

Trying to Sell, why don't you contact the NSFD and speak to the Fire Marshall yourself and ask him your questions. Then you can let all of Patch readers know the scoop!!! There has to be a reason. I can't imagine that officials in Shorewood simply made this decision just to piss everyone off!

I applaud the decision of the authorities to postpone the fireworks. I am a boater and I know how the wind can be very tricky, especially near shore. I have been in a big fire and until you experience that, you have no idea of what it is like.

The shoreline next to Atwater is covered with trees and brush, and it would not take much to set it off.

I guess WFB was lucky --- but I don't know if you want to trust your luck too much in that kind of situation !

I live in Shorewood and my neighbor had sparklers. -an ember went over the fence and my backyard hammock was on fire. I was outside at about 9:30pm putting out a fire. It was windy. This was a good decision.

I am okay with the cancellation/reschedule of fireworks. What I would like to know is where were the Shorewood police when most of my block was creating their own fireworks display illegally at all hours of the night and into the next day?? Leave the pyrotechnics to the professionals please!!
