Senior-friendly Businesses to Be Recognized by Local Group
Shorewood Connects has recently launched the Senior-Friendly Business Certification Program, aimed at recognizing the many good things businesses are already doing for their older adult customers and to make recommendations for improvement.
An effort is underway to recognize and encourage Shorewood shops to become more senior-friendly.
Shorewood Connects has recently launched the Senior-Friendly Business Certification Program. Modeled after similar initiatives in Portland, Oregon and New York, NY, the purpose of the certification program is to recognize the many good things businesses are already doing for their older adult customers and to make recommendations for improvement in specific areas related to the physical environment, customer service, website read-ability, parking and other considerations.
Shorewood's Edward Jones, 2323 E. Capitol Dr., has become the first business certified under the program.
Volunteers conduct an assessment and follow-up with a list of findings and recommendations. Businesses certified as “Senior-Friendly” receive a Shorewood Connects window decal and a logo to use in their promotional materials.
Businesses interested in learning more about the program should contact Shorewood Connects Facilitator Sue Kelley (414) 961-7262.

Does this group have a website where one can get a list of 'senior friendly' businesses or to submit suggestions for businesses that are observed to be senior friendly?

This would be nice. I pushed my dad around in a wheel chair for 7 years and heavy doors and high thresholds are not senior friendly. Really, most public spaces should be ADA assessable, especially our older buildings. It me seem cost prohibitive but think of how many shops people might not be coming in to because they are too hard to negotiate.

Once we've been able to do a number of assessments, we'll list the Senior-Friendly Businesses in Shorewood Today & on the Shorewood BID's website. This is a voluntary process, so if you know of a good business, have them contact me for more info.
