It was anything but a smooth exit for a 30-year-old Milwaukee man who police say attempted to bilk a local grocery store out of $65 worth of rib-eye steaks on Feb. 8. 

According to the police report, at about 8:44 p.m. the suspect was on his way to the exit of Pick 'n Save, 4145 N. Oakland Ave. with six packages of steak tucked inside his coat. 

Employees watched him conceal the meat on surveillance video and confronted him at the door. Upon being challenged, the suspect pushed an employee and a fight ensued. The steaks were dropped during the scuffle and the suspect ran out of the store, with two employees following in chase.

The suspect was eventually arrested by police in the 1700 block of East Capitol Drive.

In other police news:

• An unlocked 2005 Chevrolet Express van left running on the street in the 4000 block of North Oakland Avenue on Feb. 8 at 9 a.m. was stolen, but recovered a short time later police say. The van was found the following morning in Milwaukee, stuck in a snow bank, with the engine running. There was no damage and nothing was missing from the van, police say.

• Two Shorewood Intermediate School students were issued citations for disorderly conduct after they got into a fight in the halls of the school at 3830 N. Morris Blvd. The students were released to their parents at the scene.

• Police were called to Pick ‘n Save Feb. 8, after a 39-year-old Shorewood man caused a disturbance. Police say the man was arrested after he started breaking soda bottles, screaming obscenities and fighting with officers.
