Very sorry the woman got hurt, but probably not the smartest thing to approach & get that close to a strange dog without it's owner's ok. Because of this poor choice, the woman will probably be scarred for life & the dog will be destroyed.

Agreed Zak - dogs can be unpredictable. This is unfortunate for all concerned. My prayers to the woman for a speedy recovery.

The Shorewood police NEVER enforce leash laws in this village. Vicious or not, ALL DOGS should be on a leash and under the owner's control at all times. It is the responsible way. You wouldn't leave a small child unattended. So too, a pet should not be left unattended.

I walk the streets 6 days a week and see unattended dogs in yards and/or people walking dogs without a leash all the time. Most are friendly, but you never know when a dog's territorial or protective instincts will kick in.

I just saw something on another article that says the mystery has been solved. It actually happened in Milwaukee on Locust and Shepherd and that woman knew the dog. How does the original information get so screwed up?

The plot thickens - woman lied - is a professional dog walker - knew the dog and didn't want it put down.

"MILWAUKEE-A woman has now admitted that she made up a story about a stray dog biting off part of her nose in Shorewood.

The professional dog walker was bitten in the face, but by a client's dog.

She says she said it was a stray so that the dog would not be put down.

Here is the following release issued by Milwaukee Police who are now handling the case since the dog bite incident happened in Milwaukee:

A woman who originally claimed to have been bitten by a dog in Shorewood now admits she lied to protect the dog she was walking from being put down.

The incident occurred in Milwaukee on June 14, 2012 at E. Locust and N. Shepard Ave. at 4:30 p.m. when the woman, who is a professional dog walker, was walking a dog which became startled and turned and bit the woman in the face. The woman, 31, originally told medical personnel at the hospital where she sought treatment that she was bitten by "a black dog with a white chest" in the area of N. Oakland and E. Olive St. in Shorewood. There were various media reports that police were seeking a black and white dog.

Shorewood Police uncovered the truth during their investigation and have referred the case to the Milwaukee Police Department for follow-up. MPD will refer the matter to the Milwaukee Health Department and will assume the investigation."

Hopefully since the dog is known and they can find out if it has had it's shots it won't have to be put down. I hope it won't have to be put down. Dogs react differently than people. I wish the woman had not lied though. A lot of people were really concerned and frightened.
