Dog Incident Victim Lied to Police About How it Happened
Shorewood police say a Shorewood woman who was mauled on Milwaukee's east side — not here as originally believed — has been released from the hospital after treatment. She also lied to police about how the incident unfolded.
A 31-year-old Shorewood woman who was mauled by a dog late Thursday afternoon has been released from a local hospital, according to police. But her original story — that the dog was loose and unfamiliar — has been shown to be false.
According to Milwaukee police, the woman was a professional dog walker, walking the dog in question on Milwaukee's east side at East Locust Street and Shepard Avenue.
The dog became startled and bit the woman, causing her injuries. She told medical personnel at the hospital where she sought treatment that she was bit by a dog in Shorewood, to protect the canine from being put down.
She originally said the dog was loose, and as she was bending down to check its collar, when the dog attacked.
Police were led to believe the incident took place at the intersection of North Oakland Avenue and East Olive Street in Shorewood. Shorewood police subsequently canvassed neighborhoods searching for a 60-pound black dog with a white chest.
The case has been turned over to the Milwaukee Police Department.

Very sorry the woman got hurt, but probably not the smartest thing to approach & get that close to a strange dog without it's owner's ok. Because of this poor choice, the woman will probably be scarred for life & the dog will be destroyed.

@ZAK A dog that is vicious enough to bite off someone's nose should not be on the loose -- she tried to help and you are blaming her !!!!!!!!!!

Granted Dave, no dog should be on the loose, but given the right circumstance, EVERY dog can be vicious. I don't blame her 100%, but her reaction to the situation is what ultimately got her hurt & will lead to the demise of the dog. I won't get into it with you, but you're the last person that should comment on how a dog should be treated.

@ZAK, You should get a life. What a ridiculous comment. Because an irresponsible dog owner did not have control over their vicious dog a person has been injured.

I'm not sure that I'd be so quick to label this as a 'vicious' dog. The dog apparently didn't attack until approached by the woman--it wasn't exactly 'hunting' or 'looking for trouble'.
We don't know if the animal was just injured and trying to defend itself or the attack was prompted by something else. Maybe we should wait until all the facts are in before labeling the dog and its owners as 'vicious' or 'irresponsible'...

Agreed Zak - dogs can be unpredictable. This is unfortunate for all concerned. My prayers to the woman for a speedy recovery.

The Shorewood police NEVER enforce leash laws in this village. Vicious or not, ALL DOGS should be on a leash and under the owner's control at all times. It is the responsible way. You wouldn't leave a small child unattended. So too, a pet should not be left unattended.

How often are dogs left unattended in Shorewood? I rarely see dogs running around off the leash and away from their owner...

The dog could have slipped out of it's yard/open door. No one knows the back ground of this dog or the situation it may have previously or just come from while on the loose. There is nothing to say that after this dog, who most likely snapped at the lady who unknowingly got too close, went on to bite/attack her further.
It happens quite often as it did on national television awhile ago. If I were the owner, I'd be scared to death that they would take my dog and make me put him/her down.
From the MSNBC article
"Dyer’s return to the air included well wishes from fans on the street as well as her fellow anchors. Dyer said she has heard from well-wishers all over the world, including many people who also were bitten by dogs.
I just really never knew that happened so often,’’ Dyer said. “Hopefully it’s raised a lot of awareness of just of being careful."

I walk the streets 6 days a week and see unattended dogs in yards and/or people walking dogs without a leash all the time. Most are friendly, but you never know when a dog's territorial or protective instincts will kick in.

I just saw something on another article that says the mystery has been solved. It actually happened in Milwaukee on Locust and Shepherd and that woman knew the dog. How does the original information get so screwed up?

Miscommunication between the hospital and the police department, apparently.

The plot thickens - woman lied - is a professional dog walker - knew the dog and didn't want it put down.

From CBS 58
"MILWAUKEE-A woman has now admitted that she made up a story about a stray dog biting off part of her nose in Shorewood.
The professional dog walker was bitten in the face, but by a client's dog.
She says she said it was a stray so that the dog would not be put down.
Here is the following release issued by Milwaukee Police who are now handling the case since the dog bite incident happened in Milwaukee:
A woman who originally claimed to have been bitten by a dog in Shorewood now admits she lied to protect the dog she was walking from being put down.
The incident occurred in Milwaukee on June 14, 2012 at E. Locust and N. Shepard Ave. at 4:30 p.m. when the woman, who is a professional dog walker, was walking a dog which became startled and turned and bit the woman in the face. The woman, 31, originally told medical personnel at the hospital where she sought treatment that she was bitten by "a black dog with a white chest" in the area of N. Oakland and E. Olive St. in Shorewood. There were various media reports that police were seeking a black and white dog.
Shorewood Police uncovered the truth during their investigation and have referred the case to the Milwaukee Police Department for follow-up. MPD will refer the matter to the Milwaukee Health Department and will assume the investigation."

Hopefully since the dog is known and they can find out if it has had it's shots it won't have to be put down. I hope it won't have to be put down. Dogs react differently than people. I wish the woman had not lied though. A lot of people were really concerned and frightened.

Poor woman was bit in the face by a dog she knew and cared for. She panicked and didn't tell the truth. Give her a break.
