Patch Hosts Shorewood Village Board Candidates Forum on March 26
Three candidates running in the April 2 election have agreed to participate in a Patch candidates forum on March 26, and you can help us shape the debate.
Three candidates will be vying for two spots on the Shorewood Village Board in the April 2 election.
To ensure that residents are fully informed about the candidates and their positions on important local issues, Shorewood Patch is sponsoring a candidates forum with all the trustee candidates on March 26 from from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Shorewood Village Center.
Before the forum, we want to hear from you. We want our readers involved in our coverage of the campaigns. And we're starting by asking you to help us formulate questions for the candidates.
Shorewood Patch will soon contact the candidates vying for the trustee spots to get biographical information as well as their views on the issues facing the village. But we don't want to be the only ones posing the questions; we want to hear what's on your mind as well.
If you have a question you would like to ask one or all of the candidates, post it in the comments section below or on the Shorewood Patch Facebook page. We'll do our best to include your question as part of our coverage of this key race.
The three candidates running for village trustee are incumbent Trustee Patrick Linnane and challengers Tammy Bockhorst and Paul Zovic.
During the forum, candidates will be allowed to make opening and closing statements, respond to questions from Patch editors and field questions posed by members of the audience. Audience members will be given index cards to write their questions on, and the moderator will determine which questions will be asked of the candidates.
Please invite your friends and see your local democracy in action. Facebook users can RSVP on the Facebook event page.

Is Patch hosting other candidate forums for contested races in the North Shore? Fox Point? Bayside? If not, they should !

There are not currently any plans for candidates forums in Fox Point or Bayside. But, what race interests you?

How ever you'd like to pose this as a question, Honestly nothing happens in Shorewood let's get realistic here... If you look at the official 2011 budget for shorewood we have 19 count them 19 just normal police officers of which 13 of them are making over 110,000 a year with benefits, THAT IS RIDICULOUS. I would much rather drop maybe 9 of these police officers since we will still have a police chief, 2 LTs, 2 detectives, and 4 Stgs. So lets take a look at this equation we will still have a force of 19 with 9 officers 4 Stgs 2 dets and 2 LTs to cover a total area of 1.5sq miles....... I would much rather have this tax money going to the school for our kids! They make enough revenue off parking tickets and the lots plus if u look at the crime statistics from recent years yeah it's decreased but it was never really high, even compared to a suburban area as new Berlin.

Thanks for the question ConArtist. Keep them coming folks.

@ConArtist....If anything, patrol officers are of greater importance than all the top heavy management. They work three shifts per day, six officers per shift. That equates to 18 right there. Recently two of the detectives went back into uniform and are now patrolling since there were patrol officers off for service related injuries and or on light duty. Part of the reason why we don't have more crime is that officers are constantly on patrol. Of all the police, the Deputy Chief is probably unwarranted. BTW, parking and moving violations only generate between $250 K to $300 K per year.

Lyle:
How old is Chief Bano? I would guess that he's likely to be retiring sometime in the not too distant future--doesn't that make the Deputy Chief position somewhat more important than it would otherwise be?

@CowDung...He's not that old, somewhere in his mid-fifties I would guess. From what I've heard, he's not planning retirement anytime soon. In my view, the SPD isn't big enough of a department to warrant a chief and deputy chief.

Mid 50s? If he was a school teacher, there's a good chance that he'd already be retired.
From a previous Patch article on the deputy chief:
"Additionally, Banaszynski said he may retire in the next few years and is hoping to find his successor through the process of tapping a new deputy chief."

ConArtist must have looked at different reports than the offical ones. Shorewood has the 2nd highest crime rate of all the north shore communities (Including Glendale and Brown Deer) and has the 2nd fewest number of police officers per capita of all these communities. Whitefish Bay PD has only one less officer than Shorewood does yet Shorewood has about 3 times the crime. Yes, lets get rid of some cops in Shorewood. Enjoy the end results!

As for the school board candidates, I'd like to hear if they plan on doing anything to address the perceived imbalance between our school districts devotion to the arts (particularly the music/orchestra program) and the STEM subjects.
When one compares Shorewood and WFB, WFB seems much more active in getting students involved with science and engineering than is Shorewood. Are there any plans for Shorewood to join 'Project Lead the Way', 'FIRST', 'Engineering is Elementary' or add anything that will help build interest and enthusiasm for study in the STEM fields?

...and before anyone jumps in with a 'Why does CowDung hate the arts?' comment, I'd like to point out that WFB continues to have a wonderful music/orchestra program in addition to their strong STEM and athletic programs. I'd like us to be strong in all areas.

The forum is for Village Board candidates since there are 3 candidates for 2 spots--Patrick Linnane is up for re-election, and Ellen Eckman, the only woman on the board, has vacated her seat. There are the same number of spots as candidates in the School Board race; hence, there is no school board forum this time around.
Why not come out from under the alias and address your concerns to the school board, or write an Op-Ed piece? You pose good questions that should be discussed openly in our community, using civil discourse.

I would like to hear the candidates' opinions on the 'grants' given to local business. When should they be used, and the amounts paid out.

I would like to hear the candidates' opinion on the crime rate. Is there more crime, or is it being reported more often? Is there a plan going forward, or just business as usual?

I would like to hear the candidates' opinions on the property taxes. The taxes are going up, but the prices on the homes are going down. Should the Village reassess more often to reflect the changes in the economy?

Great questions NaiveOne! I will add these to the list of questions for tonight's forum.

Attending this forum would not ensure that someone can pose a question to the candidates, or have their question posed. As I understand it, the Patch editors will ask questions, and Patch will decide which written questions are answered.
Unfortunately I do not see anything exciting in any of these candidates.
Linane has been on the Board long enough, and has not done anything noteworthy that I am aware of --- from what I have seen, he is just another yes vote.
Zovic has some good credentials as former President of the School Board and he was not a "status quo" person ......... however he vacated that position, then decided to run for the school board again, then withdrew from that race and now is running for Village Board .... I wonder if he has not hit the burn out factor at this point, and if he has new and different ideas for the Village, he has not articulated them in his campaign.
I served on the Conservation Committee with Tammy Bockhorst, and I she was pleasant and contributed to the group. In this race for the Village Board, she is also playing it very safe, and being very careful not to say anything controversial. I had even sent her a number of questions several weeks ago to get a feel of where she stood on the issues, but she did not respond. Unfortunately, if her activity on the board is a reflection of her campaign, I see only another Yes Member.
I feel no matter who wins --- new and exciting ideas will be in short supply.

From Bockhorst's answers on the other article, she almost seems like a 'lead from behind' type of person--she seems to be always looking for residents to tell her what to do rather than coming up with anything on her own.

Hey David,
While, yes, we will screen questions before hand, I can assure you all audience questions will be posed, with the exception of personal attacks. We simply want to screen for those.

Hi- I don't think your recitation of Zovic's school board service is accurate. He served for 10 years, including as president and then did not seek reelection. I'm not sure any of us who have not served really understand the kind of time being on the school board involves. He has had some time away and clearly decided he wanted to serve in another capacity. That isn't "burn out" that is growth in a community leader.
As to your assaertion about the school board race, when an opening on the board was created by an unexpected resignation of Board member Mishlove, Zovic put his name in when no one with experience has submitted their name. As you may recall a number of qualified candidates submitted names just before the deadline for submission and Zovic then withdrew his name. His submission was to fill a spot until an election would be held. After submitting his name qualified and able candidates stepped up so he stepped aside. Stepping aside to give others an opprotunity to get some experience is not self serving it is good leadership. For what it's worth I think Zovic is a good choice for village trustee. The trustee position is largely about budgets and setting the big picture agenda. Zovic is that kind of leader. As a school board member he was deliberate and hard working and I think he would be a good fit as a village trustee.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have been a supporter of his for a long, long time. Ginny George

@Ginny G I was not critical of Zovic for his service on the school board, just the opposite, I said "Zovic has some good credentials as former President of the School Board and he was not a "status quo" person".
As for why he started and then stopped for going back to the board --- it sounds like you know the details which we don't
However, in the campaign for Village Board --- as I said " if he has new and different ideas for the Village, he has not articulated them in his campaign"
There is no excitement in his campaign --- as to why ???
And I do appreciate the time involved in serving --- that is why many good people do not run --- just putting in time however is meaningless if someone is not producing anything of value --- Paul served well on the school board, and agree or disagree with any of his stances, he was diligent and worked hard.

I'd like to know how the new village board candidate plans to deal with the streets that are in desperate need of repair throughout Shorewood? The partial resurfacing of Wilson didn't even go all the way to the WFB border. Throughout the village, it is like driving in a 3rd world country. A few roads have been resurfaced due to the Capital Drive reconstruction and the sewerage repairs. However, the majority of the streets in the village are in desperate need of repair. It's even been mentioned on the nightly TV news.

According to Chris Schwartz, there are already plans to do street repairs that will cover most of the rest of the Village between now and 2020, Vicki.

I would love to hear the Village Board candidates views on chickens. Yes, honestly on their view of allowing Shorewood residents to have a limited # of chickens just like the City of Milwaukee approved recently. Incidently the outgoing E. Eckman was anti-chicken. Thanks.
