State Rep. Sandy Pasch Wins 10th Assembly District Seat
The Democrat from Whitefish Bay beat out three other Democrats to win the primary and the seat; she plans to move to Shorewood or Milwaukee in order to live in the new district.
After a hard-fought race filled with racial overtones and barbs aimed in her direction, Democrat Sandy Pasch will return to the state Assembly next year after defeating three other Democratic challengers in Tuesday's primary election for the newly drawn 10th Assembly District.
"They came after her with nasty attack ads, but in true Sandy fashion, she rose above it, and we were able to succeed and we were able to win," said Rep. Jon Richards (D-Milwaukee) to the crowd at Pasch's victory party at Art Bar in Riverwest Tuesday night.
By 10 p.m., with 17 percent of precincts reporting, Pasch had declared victory. No Republicans ran for the seat, so the Democratic primary winner will take office.
Pasch defeated African-American Democratic women — Ieshuh Griffin of Milwaukee and Millie Coby of Shorewood, along with Milwaukee's Harriet Callier, who dropped out of the race last week — with 63 percent of the votes, 3,531 total, to win the seat held by Rep. Elizabeth Coggs of Milwaukee, according to Patch media partners FOX6. Coggs plans to run for her cousin Spencer Coggs’ Senate District 6 seat.
However, Coby, who garnered 1,751 votes for 31 percent of the total, said it's not the end of her fight for the 10th. She's done it for 20 years and she'll continue to work hard for its residents.
"I haven't lost anything. We have a lot of momentum and will continue to work hard and do what is necessary for the people of this 10th Assembly District," she said. "I'm in this district, I live in this district and I will continue to make sure we have resources and the ability to help the people in the district."
With 3 percent apiece were Callier and Griffin, with 179 and 177 votes, respectively.
Pasch, who lives in Whitefish Bay, has spent the last four years representing Shorewood, Whitefish Bay, Glendale, River Hills, Fox Point and a portion of Mequon. After redistricting, that 22nd Assembly District no longer included Shorewood but now stretches into the Republican strongholds of Waukesha and Washington County.
"The Republicans are the ones who decided they didn't want me in office, but today the voters said they want me to represent them," she said.
To continue to serve in the Assembly, Pasch ran for the new 10th District seat, which still includes Shorewood residents she has represented in the past, but mostly includes neighborhoods in Milwaukee's north side.
Pasch was not exactly a household name in Milwaukee, but she said she spent months knocking on every door in the district listening to residents' concerns.
"A lot of people told me no one has ever knocked on their door before who is an actual candidate, and they were happy to have someone listen to them," she said. "People want someone who will fight for them and listen to them."
Race frequently became an issue in the campaign to represent the African-American neighborhoods on the north side of the city. Pasch said it was unfortunate that her race became an issue in the campaign, but said the black voters she talked to didn't seem to care about the color of her skin.
"One man told me he didn't care if I was black, white or polka-dotted," she said.
Shorewood comes up big for Pasch
The village voted for Pasch by an overwhelming majority — nearly 96 percent, according to unofficial results from the Shorewood Village Clerk's office.
Of the 3,531 ballots cast in her favor, Pasch received 2,060 from Shorewood residents, which is 35 percent of all of those who voted in the race.
Pasch said her Whitefish Bay home is for sale, and she and her husband Allan have been looking at homes in Shorewood and Milwaukee over the course of her campaign. Starting Sunday, that home search will become more aggressive, she said.
While the Assembly doesn't resume session until January, Pasch said her work to represent the new 10th District begins immediately, and she plans to use her bully pulpit to speak about poverty, unemployment, foreclosure, access to affordable health care and quality public education.
“I am excited to continue our fight and strengthen the influence and voice of Milwaukee’s communities as the State Representative for the 10th Assembly District," Pasch said.

The nice think about blogs is that people can track what you say, and based on what you've said in the past neither one of you can come off as exactly friends of minorities especially since you both are Republicans.
Sandy not only got what she got in Shorewood, but another 1,500 votes from Milwaukee. People outside of Shorewood recognized that she would represent their interests, something that makes the minority population of Milwaukee, smarter than you.

Keith,
Take your foot out of your mouth. If you had actually tracked what I have said, you would have seen that I have recently explained to Lyle why most of my relatives are minority immigrants. In fact, you would have seen me explain that many times over the months.
Keith, unlike you, I'm not someone who is full of hot air and gets my kicks out of accusing people of racism. You do so because you are trying to compensate for a flaw you see within yourself. You know what they say about men who constantly accuse others of being gay, so what does that say about YOU accusing people of racism all the time.
Go ahead, Keith. Read what I explained to Lyle yesterday.

Wow Keith. You're a mean person full of rage and hate based on all of your comments. I did enjoy how you made assumptions about me based on ONE comment. I'll leave the name-calling and slandering to you. I simply found it funny that Sandy said race had nothing to do with her race but yet I got multiple mailings from her that showed only pics of her with African-Americans. But again, thanks for calling me a racist, clearly you're a fair and reasonable liberal.

Based on the figures above, without Shorewood (and assuming all of the approximately 86 non-Pasch votes in Shorewood went to Coby, which may not be true), Coby would have won by a margin of approximately 95 votes (slightly more if some of non-Pasch votes in Shorewood went to Griffin or Callier).
Very "Progressive", Shorewood.

You wouldn't know progressive if it bit you in the butt, which would no doubt be an enormous mouthful.
Despite the lies of the American Federation for Children, which was backed by the Rovian Scott Jenson (why isn't he in jail), Sandy won. At least for once experience and someone who goes to Madison with a spirit of service beat the money. Of course towering intellectual cynics don't recognize those qualities.
From the size and volume of the mailing pieces, Sandy looked like she was outspent three to two. But she had a proven record and a great organization.
She beat the De Vos proto-fascists. Great day for Wisconsin and the people of the 10th.
Millie is a fine person. I'm sure she'll make it in the assembly some day.

Race likely wasn't the biggest factor in Shorewood favoring Pasch...

You are spot on, David. 96% of Shorewood voters (mostly known as "white voters") went for Pasch. Prior to Shorewood being added to the vote totals, Coby was up by 10 points.
Interesting that the non-white voters voted 55/45 for the "their" candidate, but the white voters went 94/6 for "their" candidate. -- Which group is racist?
It's interesting the African American groups didn't (also) file suit against the new legislative districts. With voting patterns the way they are, Shorewood always having a high voter turnout, that district will *never* get a minority elected.
Congrats to Sandy .. the Republicans drew the lines to kick her out of Madison, and she found a way to carpetbag herself right back there. Well done.

4:35 pm on Wednesday, August 15, 2012
So what you are saying CD is that Coby would have largely gotten Republican votes if there was no primary for US Senate. It turns out that people in Shorewood will vote for a better candidate regardless of race, and Sandy happened to be a better candidate at this time.
Pretty much this smokes out the bogus sympathy for Millie Coby on the part of the righties on this blog, which is an insult to Millie, because you were using here as a tool to attack Sandy. If Millie wasn't supporting school choice there would be plenty of sneering to be sure about how she would want to live off your tax money. So please. Spare us.
Righties always whine that support minorities that support our values, which if you look at it is stupid and cynical. What explains Alan West, David Clarke and Clarence Thomas? Superior examples of the black race? No more like a bunch of guys who toe the party line.

I believe that had there not been a republican primary, most republicans would have either not voted at all or voted for Coby. Griffin is also a supporter of school choice, but the 'NOT the whiteman's bitch' thing likely cost her a lot of votes.
When have I ever said anything about Coby living off my tax money? Can you please stick with the facts at hand rather than making baseless accusations?

Fascinating to see how racist mentalities and identity politics play out every which way. Shorewood is mostly white. Pasch one. Pasch is white. It does not follow that Shorewood voted for Pasch because she is white. Logic 101...did none of you take it in college?

Consider the mindset held by many on the left that if a white person doesn't support Obama, it is because of racism. It doesn't seem too far of a jump for them to make the same judgement about those who voted for Pasch instead of 'NOT the whiteman's bitch'...

@N Peske --- I normally agree with a lot that you say, but I am afraid Mr Spock would not find your logic very logical !! As was noted by someone else,in the predominantly Black community, a fair number of them voted for both candidates -- but in Lilly White Shorewood --- 96% went White !!!
This is why Shorewood has had a reputation for being "Check Book Liberals" ---
If you want to see Shorewood go ballistic, just suggest that perhaps it would be a great idea to merge our HS District with Riverside --- I know MPS would fight to the death not to lose that high tax base on the East Side --- but wouldn't it be novel to actually have Blacks at SHS who actually live in the District ?

So you really think that Shorewood's 96% vote for Pasch had nothing to do with the candidates themselves? Who was your choice--the Carpetbagger, NOT the whitman's bitch (who also supports school choice), or the other school choice supporter?
The Shorewood voters that turned out for Pasch were just against school choice--it had nothing to do with race...

Funny how things work out. I have to admit that I was part of the Shorewood 4% and it isn't because Sandy isn't a good representative and for the most part I support her views. However, the deciding factor for me was the demographics of the new 10th. Outside of Shorewood how much voice and influence is the rest of the 10th going to have? Now that the election is over I will support Sandy 100% but monitor the situation to assure the rest of the 10th have their voice heard.

SEIU Local 150: Statement on the 6th senate district race and Progressive sweep in the recent primary elections
8/15/2012
....
Progressive change swept through the Milwaukee area on August 14th, in many Democratic primary elections. SEIU Local 150 and other labor unions/progressive organizations saw many of their endorsed candidates claim victory in close and lopsided races. Status quo incumbents and candidates were swept away by a new, younger, progressive base of local champions. Grassroot organizations and new faces to the political scene dominated this race despite special interest voucher school lobbyist groups permeating the campaign field with big cash advantages.
The biggest prize of them all was the 6th Senate District, where Nikiya Harris soundly defeated Rep. Elizabeth Coggs in a crowded Democratic primary. This race was a crucial focal point for SEIU Local 150.
“I personally, and the rest of the SEIU Local 150 family are so very proud of the courage, perseverance and determination of Nikiya Harris. She took on an entrenched candidate in Elizabeth Coggs, and beat her decisively,” said local President Mike Thomas.
Other SEIU Local 150 endorsed candidates who won their Democratic primary elections were
Sandy Pasch, 10th AD
Mandela Barnes, 11th AD
Dan Riemer, 7th AD
Evan Goyke, 18th AD
Jocasta Zamarripa, 8th AD................
