New Salon Owner in Shorewood Confident in Unique Presence

Lynn Moritz brings a following of high-end clients to Shorewood with her new shop St. Moritz.

The worst was when her client’s grandchild threw up in the car and Lynn Moritz had to carry the baby into the salon before styling her client’s hair. But she didn’t hesitate; it’s all part of the job she loves as a high-end hair stylist.

“They feel like you’re a friend. You’re not just a hairdresser,” Moritz said. “It feels good to be able to help and feel a bond with people.”

After working for many years as an independent stylist at salons in the Milwaukee area, Moritz opened her own salon in January called St. Moritz Salon at 3955 N. Prospect Ave. in Shorewood.

Two weeks ago, she and her husband Scott St. Peter bought the building, which includes six apartment units now called the St. Moritz apartments.

Moritz said her salon draws regular clients from as far as Chicago. She said some of the most common professions she sees are doctors, lawyers, professors and news anchors.

Moritz also offers home visits for clients like patrol officers who she said don’t want to come into the salon. She once drove to Chicago to do a professor’s hair at her home.

Though most of her clients are repeat customers, anyone can set up an appointment at the salon.

Haircuts begin at $30 for men, $55 for women, and $25 for children 10 and under.

The salon also offers hair coloring, styling, re-texturing, hair extensions and waxing. Moritz said they offer the only known safe alternative to the Brazilian Blowout, using a fusion smoothing treatment to straighten hair.

Every haircut comes with a free consultation — a step Moritz takes very seriously. It depends on the client, but Moritz said she generally takes 30-45 minutes determining the best cut or style for a client.

“I think I give the longest consultations of anyone I know,” she said. “I find out the goal of the client, and the best way to meet that goal. I’m realistic, and I can be brutally honest.”

As careful as she is choosing the best style for a client, Moritz is deliberate in choosing hairdressers for the salon that match her dedication.

“Upscale clients want you to wait on them hand and foot, and run errands for them,” she said. “Once I was in a car accident, and I was almost killed. I had a client calling the hospital asking if I could be released to do her hair. I need people who are used to that.”

Moritz has selected two hairdressers so far, and turned many more away. With three spots left, a sign in the window says, “Chairs for Rent” – indicating that Moritz is looking for independent contractors, not employees.

Moritz said she likes Shorewood for its mix of personalities, support of the arts, and concentration of dogs.

She hopes to contribute something of her own style to the community.

Moritz studied art at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and has created public art for the village in the past, including a bench and a butterfly sculpture.

She said she wants the salon to serve as a gallery for local artists. She wants to have fundraisers for local non-profits and do more public art.

Moritz also volunteers services like nail painting at senior centers in Milwaukee.

“It’s good karma,” she said. “I do believe that comes back to you.”

Crazy that someone would even think to pay this much. She will be out of business before the wind changes directions.

While I'm still the kind of guy that can wear a $10 haircut and be happy, I don't think that their prices don't seem all that far out of line as compared to other salons. I think the key to their success is how they are going to set themselves apart from the 13 other hair salons in Shorewood...

Her prices aren't that high. I only do private clients and work all over the country. Doesn't matter where I am, New York, LA or Shorewood, my cuts are $150, color $160 and up and keratin treatments $450 and up. I'm expensive but my work is worth it. I only use the best products available which includes BRAZILIAN SILK
NECTAR (not to be confused with Brazilian Blowout). This product comes from a company based in the Midwest called DAR-X. Give them a call, you will be glad you did: 317-602-5335.

I've been a client of Lynn's for the last 5 years, and I've never been happier with my hair. I'm also one of the people who drives from Chicago to see her, and am willing to do so because of the quality of her work. She is an artist in every sense of the word, and I wouldn't think of letting anyone else touch my hair.

I can't justify spending a lot of money for hair cuts..C'mon guys, how many things can a person do with your hair to begin with.

Either way, I couldn't believe it when I came across someone who used to cut/style my hair when I stopped in @ Great Clips in Shorewood a couple of months ago.
I'm not kidding when I say I don't want to or need to pay a lot.
After bouncing around to other stylists, ( and I'm sure some will say anyone working at one of these places cannot be called a stylist) most of which were not that great, I am very happy.

Hair styling/cutting etc is a very personal thing, but it might be worth a try to head on over to Great Clips in Shorewood on Oakland and give the manager of the salon a shot at doing a great job (jmo) at a great price.

PLUS-

They always seem to have a coupon for an even better price on the back of the Pick N Save receipt right across the street.

I think the current price is $9.99 w/ coupon.

Don't forget to tip and generous if you're happy.

Seriously, how much can a person make on a $9.99 cut after the Salon gets their share of the proceeds.

BTW, Mr. Eisenberg-

I pay ~$14.00 for my hair cut and I am just as happy, possibly more because of what I save vs when I paid over ~$240.00 for a cut & color at a salon in Brookfield years ago. Never again.

Seriously, how much hair do you even have to cut under that hat of yours?

Anyone who would make an unintelligent statement like "C'mon guys, how many things can a person do with your hair to begin with." is not a person whose fashion advice I would EVER follow. People who do hair well, get paid well, and people who don't, work at cheap clip joints like Cost Cutters, Great Clips, etc. As a former stylist, I made more money from fixing bargain priced haircuts, than anything else. You really do get what you pay for.

Absolutelyfabulous

auntie m-

What I meant by "guys" was men. No, it's not unintelligent. What is ridiculous is what people buy into for what they have to pay for certain things. To each his own, but you can get good/great services and not pay through the nose for not only hair services but just about anything else.

Do you pay $120 an hour for your auto mechanic at the dealership? Guess what, they only make $25-30 an hour and the rest goes to the dealership for all that overhead which I don't need to or am interested in paying for.

auntie m

10:19 pm on Monday, August 15, 2011

The unintelligent part of your comment had nothing to do with gender, it had to do with you questioning how much can really be done with a head of hair to begin with." Your comment shows a total lack of creativity on your part, which is why I would never follow your fashion advice. Hairdressing is a creative industry; there are hairdressers who simply cut hair (which any trained monkey can do), and then there are hairdressers who are artists and cut with the skill and precision of a surgeon, they take the time to do an in-depth analysis and consultation with each client who walks through the door - THAT is what you're paying for at an upscale salon. Comparing a cheap clip joint to an upscale salon, is like comparing a Taco Bell to a 5 star restaurant. Yes, both serve food, but they are worlds apart. As for not wanting to pay overhead, guess what; you ARE paying overhead at the cheap places. Their stylists have to fork over 50-60% of what they earn for each haircut, meaning they make about $6 per cut. Who do you think is more likely to spend the time to give you quality service, the stylist making $6 per cut who feels pressured to choose quantity over quality in order to earn a halfway decent living, or the stylist who makes 5 times that, and can therefore afford to give your hair the kind of attention it deserves?

I think it definitely is a gender thing. One of the things I like about the Great Clips is that I can be in and out of there in about 15 minutes. It would drive me nuts to have someone fussing over my hair for much longer than that. For me (and I'm thinking that most men my age would agree), haircuts are more of an inconvenience rather than an opportunity for a hair stylist to create art on my head. My wife (and I presume most other women her age), prefers the type of treatment she gets at a salon...

You are free to go wherever you choose for your $14 haircut. I realize that not everyone can afford the best, but to criticize those of us who can, and tell us that all salons/stylists are the same , and we're just wasting our money, is not only ignorant, but false. Maybe you should contact all the A-list movie stars and tell them that they too are wasting their money, and would look just as good if they got their hair done at Cost Cutters, and bought all their clothes at WalMart. Yeah, that's believable.

Yes, those of you who can't afford the expensive haircuts please respect the sensibilities of those who can. If they cared about your opinions they wouldn't be paying the extra money in order to avoid mixing with the commoners in the first place.

Bob McBride

At my age the number of clippings left behind requiring clean up is greatly diminished, as is the wear and tear on barbering equipment. In addition, the amount of actual styling that's possible given the material left to work with is extremely limited. Therefore, I would think that I should be charged at a lesser rate than would someone with a full complement of productive follicles.

My friend/stylist Jesse is one of the stylists who work with Lynn in her new salon. And it's true, once you find that one great stylist, you will follow them wherever they may go. I'm the same with my MD (I drove to his clinic in Lake Geneva until he retired). These prices are absolutely NOT "way out of line"...that's just embarrassing! Ever been to a salon on either coast?! Please support your locally owned (not corporate) salons. And St. Moritz is well worth it!

I went to Great Clips for years, until I got a promotion at work and was told by the higher ups that one of the requirements was that I adopt a more professional look to go with the new position. I was told, "You just got a raise, for God's sake get a "real" haircut!" I didn't know what they meant, but soon learned. I used to be one of those guys who thought a haircut was a haircut, until I got a much more professional assessment, and got a cut that actually gave me a distinguished look. Prior to that I never got compliments on my ordinary haircut, but now I get them on a regular basis. I'm a convert. Great Clips is fine for the kiddies, but when it's time for a "big boy" haircut, upscale is the way to go.

BTW, Joe, my brother-in-law owns one of the Shorewood coffee shops you're complaining about. The reason they allow so many coffee shops, second hand stores, and hair salons, is pretty simple - THEY ALL DO VERY WELL. If you're that desperate for a hardware store, you might want to move to West Allis.

HOLY BAT S**T Robin, Somebody must have been listening into a Westie conversation over adult beverages. What's funny is that most of the Westies aren't into couture hairstyles, but encourage those that are to get them here in Shorewood. Any business is welcome here and as long as St. Moritz pays there property taxes, there more than welcome here. On to the most important discussion; the Westies want a local hardware store here in the "Wood". I personally don't support big box if I don't have to and I would appreciate the availability of someplace I wouldn't have to drive to. CowDung is right, a place to get vintage hardware would be most welcome. If somebody wants to put up the money I'll run it for them.
