More than $2,000, Several Packs of Cigarettes Pocketed in Gas Station Burglary

Police say a double pane window on the business at 1602 E. Capitol Dr. was cracked, the window trim removed and the window taken down to gain entry.

More than $2,000 in cash and several packs of cigarettes were pocketed overnight on Thursday, during a burglary at Shorewood’s Citgo gas station.

According to the police report, sometime between 9 p.m. on Wednesday and 6:46 a.m. on Thursday, a double pane window on the business at 1602 E. Capitol Dr. was cracked, the window trim removed and the window taken down to gain entry.

Once inside, 30 packs of Newport cigarettes worth $224, several cigars and $2,195 in cash were stolen.

A police investigation is ongoing.

The gas station has been targeted in burglaries in the past, particularly two incidents a little over a year ago, where bricks were thrown through the front door and a combined $2,650 worth of cigarettes stolen.

I don't like the fact these owners use bait and switch marketing. They show a low price on the board and only after you stop do you realize they have one price for cash and another for credit card purchases.

How is that bait and switch? Can you buy the lower priced gas at the price advertised?

There are many other gas stations that do the same--they also display cash and credit pricing. I don't see an issue with it as the sign states that the conditions that go along with the prices.

It's clearly marked as a cash price on the sign out in front of the station.

Gas in Bayview is anywhere from 10 to 20 cents per gallon cheaper than Shorewood --- supply and demand !

How many times has this place been burglarized now? It seems like it happened again not long before this instance. Now THIS is a guy who needs to get with Sherriff Clarke's program.

At some point I suppose one does the math and takes some more security precautions or ... stops carrying cigarettes.

Aside on the pricing: I don't have a problem with a cash price. What i have a problem with, is GasBuddy not accounting for it. I have to keep a mental list of which stations offer the discount. But with the new credit card fee laws, it's going to get worse before it gets better.

I feel bad because the shop owners are very nice. I also missed the cash/credit price once but it is clearly marked.
