Lake Bluff Principal, Current Wisconsin Superintendent Emerge as Finalists for School Chief
The Shorewood School District will hold four community meetings on two days next week allowing residents and district staff to get to know the candidates.
School officials have chosen two school administrators from within the state — one from within the Shorewood School District — as their two finalists in the search for the district's next superintendent.
Lake Bluff Elementary School Principal Kirk Juffer and the current superintendent of the Kohler Public School District in Kohler, WI and principal of the district's high school, Martin Lexmond, have been tapped.
Juffer has been principal at Lake Bluff for 21 years and was previously the director of instruction at Holmen School District in Holmen, WI. Before that, he served the Richland Center School District for three years as a special education teacher.
Lexmond has been the superintendent and principal at Kohler Public Schools for two years. Prior to that, he was the director of curriculum and instruction as well as the director of the Department of School Innovation at Milwaukee Public Schools. He also taught in Denver, CO and was an assistant principal and teacher at MPS.
The district has lined up community meetings on May 15 and May 17 where teachers and citizens can meet Juffer and Lexmond.
On each day, four meetings will be held with residents and staff members welcome to attend, in most instances.
The search comes after current Superintendent Blane McCann announced his retirement in early January, after 10 years in Shorewood. The district then hired a consultant to help in their search.
The meeting schedule for both days is as follows:
- 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. at Shorewood Intermediate School, 3830 N. Morris Blvd., Room 122
- 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. at the southwest entrance of Atwater Elementary School's Early Education Center, 2100 E. Capitol Drive
- 2 to 2:45 p.m. at Lake Bluff Elementary School, 1600 E. Lake Bluff blvd., Room 200
- 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. at Shorewood Intermediate School Commons, 3830 N. Morris Blvd. (a session for teachers and educational professionals in the community)
A RSVP isn't required, though officials request advance notification, if possible. To RSVP, call Kim Grady at (414) 963-6901 or email kgrady@shorewood.k12.wi.us.

Wish we wouldn't have spent money on a search firm, if they had an internal candidate. Wonder why our school board can't be more transparent?

It is disappointing that this is the best the "national search" we were promised came up with. I hope the community and the School Borard understand they do not have to settle for either of these two and that another option can, and should, be to keep looking.

As a grandpa of 2 Lake Bluff kids, I'd like to say that Dr. Juffer used the utmost tact and diplomacy in resolving an important issue involving our granddaughter. If that was any indication of his people skills, the man definitely has the requisite finesse to assume such a challenging position.

I am very biased on the choice for the next school superintendent in Shorewood.
With Kirk Juffer in the running --- in my mind it is a Slam Dunk !!!
I have written previously about Dr Juffer, and praised the work he is doing.
We had a kid in Dr Juffer's school, and was fortunate to see Dr Juffer firsthand in action.
Having had 4 kids go through numerous schools in Bolingbrook, IL, Naperville, IL, Mequon, WI and Shorewood, WI --- I have never met a principal with more commitment, devotion, practical sense and concern for the kids than Dr Juffer.
He is not infallible --- none of us are --- but he is as close to the epitome of the perfect teaching professional that I have ever met.
The only question I have is why the school board wasted 11,000 some dollar$ for a search if Dr Juffer was interested in the job.
Shorewood's priorities seem very strange to me --- we have a great beach, at which we will have part time lifeguards at best, with only a $10,000 budget. But we wasted money on searches for deputy police chiefs and school administrators, when we have fully qualified and excellent candidates in our mist.
If the members of the school board did not know that Dr Juffer is an ideal person to fill the job of school superintendent with his twenty plus years at Lake Bluff -- then me thinks that our school board members may not be as smart as our average 5th graders !

If there hadn't been a national search firm hired to find candidates, I can only imagine how the school board would have been lambasted for that. Has anyone considered that Kirk Juffer is very qualified if he was chosen by a national firm, as well as Martin Lexmond, who is also an administrator from Wisconsin? When this search firm met with many community groups to collect input, the community expressed a desire to find someone with a thorough understanding of the needs of our state, community, and our school district. It seems to make sense that the two finalists were chosen from our own backyard.

There is a reason Kohler is one of the top-performing districts in the state - highest ACT scores, etc. Marty has done AMAZING things at Kohler. Shorewood would be lucky if they could steal him away.

My vote is for Kirk Juffer. He is a great steward of our community. 2O+ years of leading a culture of excellence at Lake Bluff. The school board would be sorely mistaken if they passed up on this exceptional educator.

Good bye cup cakes n chocolate milk? Really?? We're talking about education here and you're whining about cup cakes and chocolate milk? Have you heard about childhood obesity? There's a reason for that taking that stuff out of the school day and I, like some other parents don't want my kids having that crap at school. I do want empowered, talented teachers and a school committed to be kind, work hard, have fun.
