Local Lawmaker Places Blame for Dead Mining Legislation
Sen. Alberta Darling says the state missed a real chance at creating hundreds of jobs, while Democrats rejoice over the rejected bill.
Legislation that would have streamlined a new iron mine in northern Wisconsin appears dead, and local lawmakers have begun the finger pointing.
Republican State Sen. Alberta Darling of River Hills issued a statement Wednesday saying the Senate missed its chance to create an environment for hundreds if not thousands of good paying jobs, when it rejected the bill.
“I am amazed to see senators, who have watched for years as MMSD dumped raw sewage into Lake Michigan, raise environmental concerns over a bill that provides real protections for the water near the proposed mine,” said Darling who represents Whitefish Bay, Shorewood, Fox Point and Menomonee Falls. “I will continue to look for real solutions, but I fear the Democrats in the Senate feel it's more important for Scott Walker to lose his job than it is to provide jobs to thousands of folks in our state."
In response to the rejected legislation, mining company Gogebic Taconite LLC. announced it would abandon the project and was ending plans to invest in a Wisconsin mine, according to Wispolitics.com.
Sen. Dale Schultz, a Republican from Richland Center, crossed party lines and voted down the bill.
Republicans say the mine would have created 600 to 700 jobs in the area.
Democrats have balked at the concept of a northern mine, arguing it weakens water protections and would have a stark impact on the quality of drinking water.
State Rep. Sandy Pasch (D-Whitefish Bay) criticized the bill in late January after it passed the Assembly on a party-line vote. She called the legislation a damaging political giveaway and special-interest handout, and advocated parties to work together on a bill that would create quality jobs, promote the public interest, protect public health and preserve vital natural resources.
The Legislative session will end next week, and if no mining bill is realized, Gov. Scott Walker might call a special session, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The admonition might have seemed a bit more sincere if you hadn't felt the need to issue it from a podium only slightly above the baseline established by the audience you were addressing.

@Bob McBride...I don't think it is appropriate to attack anyone with absurdity. I did use the term "Teahadists" to indicate a constant flow of vile filth by a few individuals on the right that have continually made a nasty habit of personal attacks, which have little or nothing to do with the discussion. This is something that I would never accuse you and other respected people on the right of doing. We may disagree but we also don't stoop to disrespecting each other.
I don't think conservatives or people on the right are evil or nefarious, and, I won't use language that exudes that kind of hatred. However, I have been continuously assaulted with every kind of negative claim you can think of.
I don't respect people on either side of the aisle that hide behind a nom de plume and spill out vile statements about others that oppose their positions. You and I have covered this before and I think it's important to monitor our sides and call them out when they step across the thin line of civility.

Lyle, c'mon. If you were interested purely in calling them out for lack of civility, you would have stopped at that.
I know what you're doing here, Lyle. You've got the same problem with Nick, who can't even see the irony behind his most recent article (the one the that mesmerized you) about the "concealed", which is nothing more than a poor attempt on his part to conceal his own beliefs that Paul Ryan and the Republicans have historical counterparts in the Bund and Nazi sympathizers in this country.
If you want to waste your time playing mother hen, that's your own business. but when you make either direct or back-handed excuses for their behavior, you do damage to your own credibility in the process.

Keith - how does Rush Limbaugh do it? Like John F. Kennedy in the pool? Like Bill Clinton in the Oval office on an intern? In the Oval Office? Bill Maher is a personality. Maher says some uncivil things. Actually, he says lots of uncivil things. Ed Schultz is a TV personality (at least to his small audience). He has said some uncivil things.

One opportunity has been missed, which is a shame. It is also a shame that the state senate did give full consideration to the bipartisan compromise that might have made both sides happy, and kept the mining firm interested. Instead, those controlling the senate tried to steam roll another piece of legislation, which at the outset, did not have enough votes to pass. When will the blame game end?

Stop pointing the finger of blame and do something about creating jobs. If a project is environmentally irresponsible, don't do it. If it is not , but the wrong set of political cronies aren't being rewarded, do it. Stop legislating as if you politicians have some other planet to go to when this one is ruined.

Darling's comment sounds just like the Governor's. Blame others, but never your own party, which couldn't compromise on meaningful contested case hearings to give citizens a voice.

Sorry I didn’t get to you sooner. I have a day job and all. Shouldn’t stick my nose in your neighborhood, but Alberta, like good ole’ Glenn in mine, doesn’t have a clue either when it comes to business like mining and the like. Big problem with elected officials making legislation on things that should be put in the hands of professionals such as engineers and scientists which it seems our state agencies are very much short of, especially those with any kind of experience. Yeah, I got personal with Alberta. Mea culpa. Sorry.
