I-43 Southbound Traffic Backed Up From Brown Deer Road
Things are looking pretty ugly out there with the traffic backed up along I-43 southbound and I-94 southbound and westbound. The DOT is reporting delays as much as a half hour.
Northbound I-43 traffic was filtered onto North Port Washington Drive when a rollover blocked three lanes.

If you drive home using I-43 southbound to downtown, or are using I-94 southbound going out of Milwaukee, then you might want to consider taking a different route home.
The delays, which are expected to last through 6 p.m., are due to long-term lane closures and Friday rush hour traffic. Neither Patch nor our media partners at WISN 12 have heard of any major incidents.
Here are the areas affected and the travel times, according to the state Department of Transportation.
- I43 SB Capitol Drive to downtown, normally a four minute drive, is now a 15 minute drive.
- I43 SB Brown Deer Road to downtown, normally a 10 minute drive, is now a 35 minute drive.
- I94 SB Downtown to Layton, usually a six minute drive, is 14 minutes.
- I94 WB downtown to the Zoo, usually a six minute drive, is 12 minutes
- I94 WB downtown to Moorland Road, normally a 10 minute drive, is 17 minutes.

Technically I-94 southbound deos not exist, it would be I-94 eastbound. Even numbers are E/W, odds are N/S.

No, I am not perfect, and I don't believe that I claim to be. When I see repeated sentences/paragraphs, broken sentences, etc. in a news article, I think the proper thing to do is point them out. This isn't a blog article posted by a random Patch reader--it's a news story written by a paid, professional journalist.
I'm not a writer, nor did I graduate with a degree in English--I'm an engineer. If it offends my sense of the written English language, it truly must be bad. Is it too much to ask for people to proofread their article before posting?

I think this whole project is a cluster-F. I find it hard to believe they REALLY needed to close full lanes on both sides through the whole span. Could they not have worked bridge by bridge and just closed a lane around the particular bridge as needed? Then... going north they keep it to two lanes all the way up to the 794 East exit. Cars merge in just before National. National is the last area getting work and that exit is closed. Seems to me they could work on that entire exit but keep that third lane open from where cars are joining. Things would flow much smoother. 794 going south is not a realistic alternative option for commuters due to its speed issues, dropping you off in the middle of nowhere, and that others will be using that same route as the alternative. What a mess. We endured the Marquette Interchange rebuild then the Airport interchange one... it would be nice if we could have just enjoyed the road system for a year or so without more of this... and closing an entire lane should never been allowed to be an option in this stretch... work AROUND it. Or close the lanes only at night. They are only working on the bridges afterall...

I live in Caledonia and my fiance, who works in Glendale, called me from the car. When I checked the DOT cams and saw that it was over a half-hour delay, I talked to my editor and she decided that it was significant enough to have as a breaking news alert. Since a number of people living in the Caledonia are commute, it made sense to do. I promise we won't make it a breaking news alert that often.

Greg, I don't see "southbound" as an issue. I-94 and I-43 are the same pavement between the Mitchell and the Marquette, and the orientation is closest to N/S. I-94 East is taking you southbound from downtown. Eastbound would quickly become a problem.

What would you call I-94 where its general direction is SE/NW?
It may be just as well if you go back to the old stand-by "Go that way past the Johnson place and turn where we had the wheat field". The Johnsons haven't lived there since '63 and we haven't farmed since the plow horse died, but we all know what you are talking about.
