Shorewood Home Burglarized Overnight on Sunday
The village has experienced a slew of home burglaries, including 14 in one month, but this is the first reported incident since Oct. 30.
Police say owners of a home in the 2200 block of East Newton Avenue didn’t realize their home had been burglarized overnight on Sunday until a stolen credit card was used fraudulently.
Along with the credit card, a $40 purse, checkbook and personal identification were taken when the unlocked home was entered through a side door sometime between 10 p.m. on Sunday and 7 a.m. on Monday.

Glad I moved out of Shorewood as the area south of Capitol started going downhill about five years ago

Regardless of what I said below I still feel very safe in Shorewood, you just need to lock your flipping doors. Area south of Capitol has been down hill for a lot longer than five years.

I am so surprised in our media savvy times that anyone that lives in Shorewood is unaware of these burglaries and continue to leave their doors unlocked. Perhaps people have teenagers that are coming home later and not locking the doors? I don't know what it is but never in my 22 years of living here have I ever considered being in my house without at least the storm door locked much less everything else locked overnight. It's quite frankly downright stupid!

Downhill? I don't think it's 'that' bad. Haven't the majority of the burglaries happened north of Capitol along Lake Drive? I agree though, lock your doors.

Yes - that's where the money is............................otherwise, west of Oakland is just plain thuggery.

Wait, let me get this straight: south of Capitol is bad AND everything west of Oakland is bad now too? So that means everyone from Bartlett to Wilson is a thug? Cricket, you might want to double-check what you just typed.

While I can't speak for all the Westies, but Lyle Ruble is no thug...

I moved to Shorewood in 1984. Our house was burglarized three days after we moved in by the landlord's son's friend. They had keys and left them behind (smart). The difference between Shorewood and Milwaukee is that the police will catch the criminal. In our case, the perpetrator was caught and spent time in jail along with restitution. Our police department takes these crimes seriously. No place is safe when folks who don't lock their doors--not even in the smallest, rural town. It's not just locking our doors, there was a period of time several years ago that people were being robbed in their garages when they returned home from work. We need to think safety always.

It also doesn't help that Shorewood is known for being an 'anti-gun' village. Burglars are pretty confident that they won't run into an armed homeowner--if one is going to break in to homes, it's best to do it in places that are unlikely to resist with deadly force...

Give me a break CowDung. People would probably just end up shooting one of their loved ones. Guns do not detour crime. If they did, we'd all be carrying and there would be no crime. I've always thought that men who need guns are lacking in other areas of their lives.

What do you think about women who need guns? Please try not to be a sexist, Vicki.
We all don't have to own guns or carry in order to deter crime. The fact that there MAY be a gun in the home could be enough to influence a potential burglar to rethink his plan. Criminals tend to prey on those that cannot fight back--they tend to look for the quick and easy crimes, not to put themselves in a situations that could get them injured or killed.

What I can't believe is that I read several people awoke to people in their houses and then just shooed them out, went back to bed and then called the police. I could not sleep with my doors unlocked, not even an afternoon nap.

While I think there are some assumptions made about the relative chance of running into armed resistance, I think to a larger extent the availability of easily pilfered stuff (unlocked cars, unlocked homes) combined with assumptions made about the quality and quantity of such stuff in places like Shorewood and WFB probably play a greater part in making them preferable targets. In addition, once across "the bridge" or in the safety of the buffer area provided by 3 parks and wooded area along the river, chances of apprehension decrease significantly.

Allow me to rephrase - not everything south of Capitol is bad - south of capitol and west of oakland also known as "the hole" is pretty crime ridden. Mostly rentals. If you check the various crime alert areas web sites that is where a lot of this stuff happens, general thuggery type behavior, drug related, people being held up on street corners, day to day stuff. Actual robberies can happen anywhere but I do not think of them in terms of my general safety. I have lived here for 22 years and there are definitely places I would not walk at night now or 15 years ago so although I think we are having a rash of burglaries right now, perpetrated by one or two individuals I think Shorewood is safe as it has always been.

First of all, Thank you for your kind words about the Shorewood Police Department. We are working very hard to catch these individuals. We do have a few suspects and are working on putting together a case and to arrest them.
Secondly, Shorewood is a very safe community. I have not only grown up here myself, I raised a family here. This is one of the reasons that I commented on this article, Shorewood is safe and because of that sometimes we let our guard down. I am not blaming anyone for a crime being committed on their property, I just want to remind people that we as a community need to help each other to remain safe and continue to be a good place to live, work and shop.
Please remember to:
Lock all door and windows, even if you are just going in the backyard. Burglars hate to make noise.
Light up the outside of your home. Burglars don’t like light
Lock your car doors even if the car is in the garage and then shut and lock your garage. Never leave valuables in the car, especially visible through the windows
Call the police if you see something suspicious. You know your neighbors, if it looks wrong to you or just seems wrong to you – call 9-1-1 or if you don’t think it is an emergency but need an officer to check it out, call our dispatch center at 351-9900

On a side note, of the 24 burglaries reported this year we have made an arrest in one garage burglary, 3 burglaries where the suspect pried open a coin operated washing machine in an apartment, 2 apartment burglaries and one home burglary where a neighbor called us when they heard something suspicious.
