3 Cars Hit in Break-ins Late Last Week

Nearly $1,400 in property taken in illegal entry to cars on Thursday and Friday.

Three cars were hit in illegal entry to autos late last week.

An unlocked car was reported illegally entered on Thursday while parked in a driveway in the 4100 block of North Murray Avenue. About $1,360 worth of property was taken, including a backpack, laptop, Apple iPhone, voice recorder and computer keyboard.

A car parked in the 1800 block of East Kenmore Place was illegally entered on Friday. The owner told police they were unsure if the car was locked, though there were no signs of forced entry. A list of items stolen from the car wasn’t immediately available from police.

Sometime overnight on Thursday an unlocked car was illegally entered and a $20 walkie-talkie taken. Police say the car was parked in an unlocked garage in the 4500 block of North Newhall Street at the time of the theft.

Maybe it's time to start issuing tickets to folks who leave their cars unlocked and then have stuff stolen out of them. It's a waste of the police department's time and it encourages thieves to return to the area.

Bob - Good one! I agree, I have lived in this village for 25 years and I do not feel it is any less safe than it was back then. I have never ever left my car unlocked. Even if I was going back out to it again in an hour. We have too much foot traffic in Shorewood

and don't be stupid enough to leave ANYTHING of value in the car!
I once heard that insurance companies do not have to cover loss if the car is not locked...do you know if this is true??

Anyone else had trouble with shorewood police being less than professional when interacting with family or friends with poor mental health? I'm thinking there's a need for training and protocols, or reinforcement of any protocols that exist. I'm at karenwicklund@aol.com

Karen - perhaps you could request a meeting with the chief? or village manager?

Wow, unlocked cars were illegally entered! The owners should be at fault, especially the idiot who lost their electronic goodies, and the police reports dismissed due to felony stupid. In this day and age is it really so difficult to lock your car? I think not but, "Stupid is as stupid does", every day of the week. To leave your car unlocked for ANY amount of time then you deserve to have your stuff stolen. These same people are the mentally that say when their kid gets hurt or lost "But I only turned by back for a second". They are also the women who leave purses in grocery carts and walk 5 feet, 10 feet away without any possible thought going on.

Karen, if you have concerns about how police handle certain things there are other ways to bring them to light. I can feel for your concern as there are many things the police need to get better about, but think outside the box on how to bring attention to your cause. Find a way to bring people together who have other concerns as well and find some common ground to move forward. Be sure not to bash the police, as well as others, because that will only hinder your efforts. I do wish you the best of luck.

So just because someone leaves their car unlocked they deserve to be the victim of a crime? That's absolutely ridiculous. While I agree that people should in general lock their vehicles, to say they deserve to have their belongings stolen is simply idiotic. And Bob, you can't issue tickets to people for something that's not a crime, if you want to make it a crime, run for office on that idiotic premise.
